Stand-ups
Stand-ups are daily, short (15 minute) meetings that help the team synchronize, discuss progress and roadblocks, and adjust course for the next 24 hours.
Tips:
- Actually standing up is intended to help keep the meeting short. If you find your meeting is not focused, try this.
- The stand-up is NOT meant to be a status update to a person (lead, PM, DE, client). The stand-up is for the team to talk about progress and roadblocks. If you find your team tending toward status updates, try having each member "pass the baton" and name the next person to go instead of having one person directing.
- Try to avoid having meetings in the middle of a block of time that could otherwise go uninterrupted. You could try having stand-ups just before or after lunch for example to avoid losing valuable time every day to context-switching.
- If one person is remote, everyone should be remote. Avoid having a group of people in a conference room with 1 or 2 people called in. The people calling in are at a huge disadvantage as they often hear muffled voices, miss out on nonverbal communication, cannot intuitively process cues for when to speak, miss out on humour, and will feel like they are not included in the conversation. When everyone is calling in (Teams, Hangouts, Zoom, etc.), it really does make a difference in improving inclusivity. link
